1860's Barn The Hay Years
This barn was constructed in the 1860's for hay storage. It continued to be used for hay storage after the Foster family era, as its owners rented it out to local farmers. A system of ropes and pulleys attached to a hay fork picked up hay from the wagons that drove through the barn. The fork full of hay then travelled to one side or the other of the barn and dropped the hay onto the haystack below.

Current Uses

Recent years have brought good times to this old barn. New beams and foundations and new roofing have made it safer and stronger. It has also become much busier, with guests grinding corn, sawing wood, trying out the hand drills, plane, and grinding stones and lifting hay with ropes and pulleys.

New this year is a layer of hazelnut (filbert) shells on the dirt floor to keep dust down.

Our new site plan includes a wagon shed, which will house the wagons, buggies, and sleighs and allow even more space in the barn.
