Ridge and Rafters

The ridge is the very top of the cabin roof. Ridge posts hold it up.

Putting the Ridge Posts in Place

Mortice and tenon joint is formed to hold ridge post in place. Hole is drilled through both pen log and post.

Wooden pin is pounded through the hole.

Pin is sawn off even with the log on both sides.

Lifting the ridgepole

Angled poles are used to bring ridgepole to the top of the cabin roof

Caleb Wiles helps as "Come-along" at end of crane pole pulls the ridgepole into position

Stringers are formed with saw, axe and chisels, and held still with an iron "dog".

Below: Adze, ship carpenter's axe, and dog rest on the scaffolding. To this point, the scaffolding is the only part of the cabin that has any nails in it. Dennis and Tom discuss the next phase of the project: rafters and roofing.
