Volunteer at the Farm!
Share your skills and meet new friends.
The Philip Foster
Farm is looking for volunteers to share their skills and knowledge with others including weaving, woodworking, story-telling,
carving, spinning, knitting, painting, cooking, singing, playing music, etc.
Or volunteers can
spend a day on the beautiful Farm helping with office tasks, carpentry, gardening, guiding tours, or tending the Pioneer Store.
We welcome volunteers

Volunteer Information
Tour Interpreters
These period dressed guides demonstrate a station during group tours. (Under age
12 must have a parent on site.) Benefits: Public Speaking, Community Service, and Teaching Experience in a non-threatening
environment, and free refreshment at end of tour for student volunteers. Adult volunteers shall receive a JZH Historical
Society membership after 10 hours of work. All volunteers receive a printout of hours worked each season for your records.
Apprentices
An apprentice must be at least 15 years old, and commit to work at least 30 hours
in one season (about one tour per week). Apprentices are trained in specific skills, which may include storekeeping, house
tours, blacksmithing, or other pioneer crafts. Benefits: Same as Tour Guides, plus additional training, and a letter of recommendation
from Philip Foster Farm staff to potential schools or employers. There are no full-time paid positions at the Farm yet, but
responsible Apprentices may be offered occasional or seasonal paid work.
Master
If you have a specific pioneer skill you’d like to pass on, we invite you to
connect with willing learners at the Farm. Blacksmiths, textile crafters, soap and candle makers, musicians, woodwrights--this
is the place to share your craft with the public and teach it to others!Benefits: Same as Apprentices, plus advertising privileges.
Summer Hosts
Vintage dressed volunteers greet summer visitors, share historical information, and
help Farm staff with various projects. A great way to involve your family in local history at the pace of pioneer life. Benefits:
Same as Tour Interpreters.
Maintenance
Various building and maintenance projects are done throughout the year, including
mowing, gardening, painting, renovations, and reconstruction or renovation of historic buildings. Let us know what your
interests are, and we will connect you with the right person. We need your skills!
Event Help
Reliable volunteers are needed for our special Events: Mother's Day Brunch,
Father's Day BBQ, Mary Charlotte's Garden Party & Tea, the Summer Farm Sale, Cider Squeeze, and A Country Christmas.
Any help is always appreciated. Benefits: Same as Tour Guides.
JZH Board Members
Jacknife-Zion-Horizon Historical Society (JZH) has operated the Philip Foster Farm
as a public Historical Site since 1993. A dedicated board of volunteers keeps the Farm running. If you'd like
to help make policy decisions, or manage a particular piece of the Farm's operations, please consider joining the board.
The board meets the second Monday ten months out of the year. A public board meeting is held annually in the summer.
