New CD by Heartstrings

A newly-released CD of Oregon Trail-era music is now available in the pioneer store at Philip Foster Farm.  The album is the first from Heartstrings, a husband-and-wife duo specializing in period and historical performances.  Heartstrings appears regularly at Philip Foster Farm and other Oregon historical sites.

The CD, titled Heartstrings at Oregon Historical Landmarks, was produced in cooperation with JZHHS and three other historical organizations.  The cover incorporates eye-catching photos of properties preserved and interpreted by these organizations and each group tells its story in the liner notes, making the album a nice memento for anyone with an interest in Oregon history.

Through the magic of multi-tracking, the CD features hammered dulcimer, guitar, violin, flute, whistle, string bass, and vocals.  It includes arrangements of some of Cal Scott’s tunes from the Bound for Oregon soundtrack as well as many traditional favorites, and sells for only $15.00.

Barn and Store Repairs

The farm is closed this week, getting a new half-roof on the barn and replacement supports for the store. It's been a great summer, and we appreciate all of our guests who visited, danced, sang, played, picnicked, toured, learned, created and donated over the summer. The world is full of delightful people and interesting things. Thanks for being part of our story.

Craft Classes for Volunteers

Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 have seen fun times at the Farm this summer, as our young volunteers learn more about the crafts, games, stories and sayings of our pioneer predecessors. July 16th was about folk music and musicians, with fiddlers, dulcimers and whistlers. July 23rd was about flowers and vegetables, potpourri and watermelon. It's not too late to join the fun! Cost is $3.00 per week to drop in or $15.00 for the whole season. Family discounts are available.

Volunteer Summer

Following a beautiful Father's Day, with great food, music, exhibits, pony cart rides and vendors, a crew of volunteers put in our pumpkin patch on Wednesday, June 18th. Keep an eye on the area near the parking lot, as major changes will occur over the summer. Tom Burnett and his assistant, Caleb Wiles, are working on the log cabin. The pumpkins will be growing, and some amenities for picnics and events will be added over the summer as well. More fencing was added on Father's Day,with the help of some young visitors. An amazing fact: All the split-rail fence added so far comes from just one tree!

Keep an eye on us!

Volunteer Highlights

If you've been to our site before, you'll notice a big change. That change is due to Clackamas Community College computer science student Lanelle King, who earned work experience credit by building this site in Dreamweaver. The Jacknife-Zion-Horseheaven Historical Society appreciates Lanelle's work and hopes you enjoy navigating the site.

If you are a high school or college student who would like to build skills, earn credit and benefit the community, please contact us.
